THE SECOND SEAN’S lips touched Raelynn’s, trouble brewed deep inside her chest. She ignored the idea that this man could shatter her heart into a thousand flecks of dust. This was exactly what she wanted—and needed—from him.

Raelynn parted her lips and teased his tongue inside her mouth, which didn’t take a whole lot of effort. Her breath quickened, matching the tempo of his pulse—a pulse she could feel underneath her fingertips as they pressed deeper against the muscles of his chest. Touching Sean was supposed to anchor her. Instead, electrical impulses vibrated through her.

There was more passion and heat in this kiss than in any she’d ever experienced. She’d known on instinct Sean was special, and this moment happening between them proved she could still trust her intuition.

Rather than pull back, he seemed to lean into the kiss as he looped his arms around her waist and tugged her closer until their bodies were flush. Sparks practically flew at every point of contact, and she could only imagine what skin to bare naked skin would feel like with this man. The image of their bodies in a tangle, arms and legs entwined, sent warmth rocketing through her, circling low in her belly.

This time she was the one who slowed down the momentum. Eyes still closed, he pressed his forehead to hers. She could breathe in his breath. The dark roast coffee tasted so much better on Sean’s lips.

A few deep breaths only managed to bring in more of his spicy scent. Raelynn forced herself to shift her attention to something that didn’t cause her pulse to skyrocket. The kisses had worked their magic anyway. She’d been fully distracted and immersed in everything that was Sean.

It wouldn’t last...couldn’t last. She needed to get her mind back into reality, and the very real possibility a highly trained assassin might want her dead. At the very least, he wanted to use her to torture Mitch. But that wasn’t the only reason.

For another long moment, she stood there as the sun disappeared. The only sounds besides their breathing came from crickets chirping. Even those noises were drowned out by the sound of her own heartbeat.

“Should we go inside?” she finally asked Sean.

“Whenever you’re ready,” he said, his low timbre washing over her and through her, causing butterflies to release inside her. The sensation of cliff diving nearly took her breath away. “Or we could stay out here. Talk about whatever it is that’s running through your mind.”

He reached for her hand and then linked their fingers before walking over to a wooden swing facing the expansive backyard. It had occurred to her when they’d first driven in that having a big open space back there made it difficult for anyone to sneak up on the house. There wasn’t much to hide behind. It was smart to keep the area clear. The other safeguards reminded her just how dire her own situation was that she would need to be here at all.

She sat down on the swing, and Sean leaned against the railing holding it up.
